Laparoscopic Surgery

What is laparoscopic surgery for dogs?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a small camera and specialized instruments passed through one or two tiny incisions, allowing our veterinarians to visualize and operate on internal organs without the need for a large open incision. First developed in the early 1900s, it is now widely considered the gold standard for procedures such as spays in dogs. At Cedarview Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer laparoscopic surgery for dogs in Ottawa.

How does the procedure work?

One or two small incisions are made into the abdomen, through which a trocar (a specialized surgical port) is placed. A rigid camera is passed through the port to allow clear visualization of the internal organs on a monitor. Carbon dioxide gas is used to gently expand the abdominal cavity, providing the surgical team with a clear working space. The gas has minimal side effects and is well tolerated. Anesthesia is similar to any standard surgical procedure.

What laparoscopic procedures do we offer?

At Cedarview Animal Hospital, we offer the following laparoscopic procedures for dogs in Ottawa:

  • Laparoscopic spay (ovariectomy — removal of the ovaries)

  • Laparoscopic spay (ovariohysterectomy — removal of the ovaries and uterus)

  • Abdominal cryptorchid neuter (retained testicle removal)

  • Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (stomach tacking to prevent bloat in large breed dogs)

  • Organ biopsy (liver, intestinal, pancreatic, and kidney)

  • Gallbladder aspirate and instillation

  • Laparoscopic-assisted cystotomy (bladder surgery)

What are the benefits of laparoscopic surgery?

Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic procedures offer meaningful advantages for your pet:

  • Significantly less pain during and after surgery

  • Smaller incisions with reduced risk of complications

  • Less trauma to surrounding tissue, meaning a gentler recovery

  • Faster return to normal activity and quality of life

  • Superior visualization of internal organs for greater surgical precision

What is the difference between a laparoscopic spay and a traditional spay?

In a traditional spay, a 6 to 8 cm incision is made into the abdomen, and the ovaries, uterine horns, and uterine body are exteriorized and removed. In a laparoscopic spay for dogs, one or two 1 to 3 cm incisions are made, and only the ovaries are removed using a camera and vessel-sealing device. The result is a less invasive procedure with reduced post-operative pain and faster healing, making laparoscopic spay an increasingly preferred option for dog owners in Ottawa seeking the best surgical experience for their pet.

Is my pet eligible for laparoscopic surgery?

Patients over 5 kg are generally eligible for laparoscopic procedures. For laparoscopic spays, female dogs who have not yet gone into heat, or who are 2 to 4 months post-heat, are the best candidates. A pre-surgical consultation with one of our veterinarians will confirm whether laparoscopic surgery is the right fit for your pet.

Who performs laparoscopic surgery at Cedarview Animal Hospital?

Laparoscopic procedures at Cedarview are performed by Dr. David Sparks, Dr. Kim Holzman and Dr. Andrew Holmes, who have received specialized training in minimally invasive veterinary surgery. They are assisted by Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) with dedicated training in laparoscopic surgical support — ensuring your pet benefits from an experienced, coordinated surgical team.

How much does laparoscopic surgery cost in Ottawa?

Laparoscopic procedures are typically priced higher than traditional open surgery, reflecting the specialized training, advanced equipment, and rigorous sterilization protocols required. The investment is often considered worthwhile given the reduced pain, faster recovery, and lower complication risk for your pet.
