Immune Response vs. Vaccine Reaction

What should you watch for after your pet receives a vaccine?

Just like in humans, there are a number of normal, mild and short-lasting immune responses that are common after your pet receives vaccinations.

Normal/Expected Immune Response (Normal Vaccine Reaction)

  • Mild fever

  • Lethargy (remains rousable)

  • Inappetence (less than 24 hours)

  • Mild vomiting (less than 3 times in 12 hours)

  • Mild diarrhea (less than 3 times in 12 hours)

  • Mild swelling/discomfort over vaccine administration site

  • Sneezing, not lasting longer than 6 hours (with intranasal) bordetella vaccine

  • Reverse sneezing, not lasting longer than 12 hours (with intranasal) bordetella vaccine

Allergic reactions are rare but dangerous, and you should seek veterinary care immediately if any of the following occur:

  • Swelling of the face

  • Trouble breathing

  • Excessive GI upset (profuse vomiting, or any GI signs lasting more than 36 hours)

  • Hives

  • Severe lethargy (not rousable)
