Laparoscopic Surgery

What does laparoscope mean?

Laparocope is a combination of two words; Lapar, meaning abdominal wall or flank, and -scope, meaning instrument for examining or viewing. When put together, this combination means to look into the abdominal cavity.

Canine Laparoscopic Procedures

Laparoscopy is a type of minimally invasive procedure used today for primarily canine spays. It was first performed in the early 1900s, and has since continued to make a positive impact on pet health care services.

The procedure requires 1-2 small incisions made into the abdominal cavity. A trocar (a type of surgical instrument) is placed to allow a rigid camera to be passed through the port to visualise the internal organs.

The anesthesia is very similar to any other anesthetised procedure. While carbon dioxide is used to insufflate the abdominal cavity, there are minimal side effects from the gas.

What types of procedures can be performed?

Here at Cedarview Animal Hospital we are proud to offer many different services laparoscopically, such as:

  • Ovariectomy (removal of the ovaries)

  • Ovariohysterectomy (removal of the ovaries and uterus)

  • Abdominal cryptorchid neuter

  • Laparoscopic assisted gastropexy

  • Biopsy - liver, intestinal, pancreatic and kidney

  • Gallbladder aspirate and instil

  • Laparoscopic assisted cystotomy

There are several benefits to laparoscopic procedures, including:

  • Less intra and postoperative pain

  • Excellent internal organ visualisation

  • Reduced tissue trauma

  • Faster recovery time

What is the Difference between Laparoscopic and Traditional Spays?

In traditional spays, a 6-8 cm incision is made into the abdomen, where the reproductive organs are exteriorized and removed. This includes the ovaries, uterine horns and uterine body. In laparoscopic spays, one or two 1-3 cm incisions are made into the abdomen, and only the ovaries are removed using a camera and a vessel sealing device.

Who is eligible for laparoscopic procedures?

Patients over 5 kg are eligible for laparoscopic procedures. For spays, females who have not gone into heat yet, or are 2-4 months post-heat are eligible.

Who performs laparoscopic procedures?

Both Dr. David Sparks and Dr. Christie Limbrick have received specialized training in laparoscopic surgery. In addition, our RVT, Lisa, has undergone specialized training as well to be able to assist in these procedures.

What are the costs associated with laparoscopic procedures?

Please contact the clinic to request an appointment with a veterinarian to discuss the options for your pet, as well as pricing. These procedures tend to be somewhat more expensive than a traditional open abdominal procedure due to the specialised training, sterilisation process and equipment that is required.
