Travelling With Your Pet? Here’s What You Need to Know.
Cedarview Animal Hospital can provide pre-export exams for you pets and fill in the required international paperwork, but this is just one step in the process of travelling with your pet to a foreign country. There are a few steps that have to be arranged by you, the owner, before you come to see us here at the hospital.
Export Certificate – Your pet will need an export certificate that is filled out by our clinic and then endorsed by the CFIA Federal Veterinarian; this document must be filled out in blue ink and some countries do require the document to be printed on legal sized paper. Some countries require their own specific certificate while others will accept the general CFIA export certificate.
CFIA Federal Vet Appointment – in addition to an exam and paper work appointment with our clinic you must also make an appointment with the CFIA to have your documents endorsed prior to travel. This appointment has to be scheduled and is not on a drop in basis. Ensure that you know the time sensitivity of this appointment and when it has to be done in relation to your departure date.
Export Requirements – every country has different requirements for pets entering from foreign countries. From vaccines, to quarantine, to microchips, to deworming, etc. Some of these requirements must be done within designated time limits so it is imperative that you are aware of these requirements prior to travel. Some countries require vaccine titers and these can take upwards of 6 weeks for results.
Medication for Travel – if your pet is nervous with travelling, or you are unsure of how your pet may handle travel via aircraft please speak with one of our vets about possible calming medications your pet can have. We want your pet to have the best experience they can while travelling.
